How do I Downsize as a Senior?
As people sell their homes in Riverside and Corona and look for new ones, some continuing-care retirement communities across Riverside County are offering new services and incentives to entice senior citizens.
These services include personal moving consultants, lists of preferred real estate agents and cash loans, all offered to seniors, who make up about 20 percent of the sellers market.
Earlier this year, when Bob and Marilyn Macrae were ready to sell their home in Riverside, Ca where they had lived for 38 years, they were aided by Jory Blake, a personal moving consultant employed by Senior – Company, who is dedicated to serving the 55+ community.

There are no statistics tracking the market for these continuing-care communities, but as more homes sell across the Riverside, Ca, sales directors report increased interest.

Some of this trend has as much to do with real estate sales as it does with demographics. From 2000 to 2010, Riverside population grew by 4.5 percent, according to the U.S. Census. But the 55-and-older population grew by nearly 20 percent.
There are a few indisputable facts: Homes are selling more quickly; prices are slightly off their lows; interest rates remain low, which spurs buyers, and the realization — sometimes a disappointing one — that sellers will never see the value they had at the market’s height is encouraging older owners to sell.
“They would much rather move now than wait until 2018 to finally get that price they may have gotten in 2006,” Armando said.
Jory’s goal is “to get people to overcome their fears of listing their home, and fears of not being able to sell it.”
“The biggest obstacle you always hear is ‘I’m not ready yet,’ ” Jory Blake said. ” The other block is, ‘I still have to sell my home and the market is bad and I’m not going to get what I want.”
